LASER HAIR COMB

HairMax LaserComb Technology

The HairMax works via the principle of photo-bio stimulation, a process by which nutrient rich laser energy is delivered to the hair follicle.  This process causes a revitalization of the individual follicle, and a general strengthening of the hair.

Laser light bathing the hair and follicles

Depending on the model, the HairMax uses a total of 5 or 9 individual laser beams, with each beam emitting the maximum amount of energy necessary to stimulate the hair follicles and effectively cause re-growth.

The general hypothesis behind the method of action of the HairMax is actually two-fold. First, the laser light causes increased vascularization and an increase in cellular metabolism. Similar to the natural process of photosynthesis, the light energy delivered to the scalp literally “feeds” individual cells with the end result being more active, productive hair cells.

Secondly, the light energy emitted from the HairMax may increase blood flow and circulation within the scalp. This increase in blood flow is crucial to promoting healthy hair growth, and brings important nutrients into the follicle, while allowing the follicular cells to effectively dispose of detrimental waste products, such as DHT.

Read on to see, in detail, how the HairMax works at the cellular and follicular levels to promote hair growth.

Phototherapy: Centuries of Scientific History

Special
 Dedication
In 1903, the second Nobel Prize in Medicine (Physiology) was awarded to Niels Ryberg Finsen, M.D., in recognition of his contribution to the treatment of diseases with concentrated light energy, “PhotoTherapy”. Dr. Finsen was recognized for opening a whole new avenue for medical science.

It was this Nobel Prize winner’s important discovers in the field of PhotoTherapy that laid the foundation for the invention of the LaserComb for the treatment of hair. Dr. Finsen is also responsible for bringing early credibility to this therapy. This website is dedicated to Dr. Finsen and his work.

The use of phototherapy, the science behind the HairMax, has a long and substantial history.

Archaeologists have found that as early as 1550 BC Egyptian papyri detailed the use of phototherapy as a treatment for everything from serious physical ailments to jewelry enhancement.

Later, the Greeks built solarium cities high in the mountains to harness the additional ultra-violet light available at higher altitudes. They used these “cities of light” for healing tuberculosis and to treat and subdue the effects of the smallpox virus.

In 1903, the second Nobel Prize in Medicine (physiology) was awarded to Niels Ryberg Finsen M.D., in recognition of his contribution to the treatment of diseases with concentrated light energy, or “phototherapy.” It was this recognition that opened new avenues for medical science, and led to similar significant experimentation throughout the 20th century, including those which would later lead to the creation of the HairMax LaserComb.

Today, phototherapy devices are emerging as the forefront in medical device technology.

It is thanks to these many years of research that we can make the HairMax LaserComb available to you with the assurance of solid scientific backing.

Detailed Technology Behind the HairMax

The underlying technology of the LaserComb is based on Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) or “Laser PhotoTherapy.”

The HairMax uses a laser diode operating in the red portion of the visible color spectrum. But while still emitting visible light, the laser light of the HairMax is different from natural light in several ways, hence its effectiveness in re-growing hair.

The light of the HairMax is mono-chromatic, meaning all of the energy is essentially one wavelength or color. Whereas a light bulb produces a broad spectrum of light and variable energy waves, the LaserComb’s delivery of light is strictly consistent. It is this property that allows its beams of light to penetrate the scalp and hair follicles in a manner most conducive to growing hair.

Dead root. Beyond revitalization.

A. In the “Growth Phase” or “Anagen Phase”, each hair grows approximately one centimeter (1/2 inch) a month for a period of 2 to 8 years. The LaserComb helps by giving energy to the hair growth process and producing healthier, fuller hair.
B. In the “Resting Phase” or “Telogen Phase”, the hair stops growing and ‘rests’ for 2 to 4 months and eventually falls out. The LaserComb helps by stimulating re-growth of new hair.
C. Termed “Vellus Hair” (light colored, short, fine "peach fuzz” hairs), the LaserComb helps these fine hairs by stimulating them to grow into thicker, more mature hair.
D. The root is dead and cannot be helped.
It is postulated that the HairMax stops and/or reverses the cycle of follicular miniaturization by stimulating the follicle through its unique delivery of light energy described above.

Studies on the effects of Laser PhotoTherapy have shown that it leads to an increase in the metabolic energy transponder known as adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which contributes to energy levels in living cells. This higher amount of energy delivered to the scalp and individual hair cells, in turn, allows for an increase in blood flow to the capillaries of the hair root. In general, due to this process, more nutrients are delivered to the living cells that are a part of the hair shaft.

Additionally, this increased blood flow also allows the cell to expend waste products, such as DHT (One of the major catalysts of androgenetic alopecia). DHT is a bi-product of testosterone and, in short, elevated levels of DHT result in an attack of the hair follicle, and subsequent miniaturization eventually leading to baldness.

Results of our clinical study showed that virtually all patients using the HairMax demonstrated some degree of hair re-growth from this remarkable, but still not completely understood, process of action.
