I was loosing my hair by the age of 26. By the time I was 40 I had lost 30% to 40% of my frontal hair and had been looking into a transplant for almost 10 years. I saw 2 other physicians who specialize in hair restoration and nearly signed up for the procedure with one of the other doctors. Then I saw an ad in the local newspaper for a free consultation with Dr. John Porcaro. I met with him and was very impressed with his approach to my hair loss and positive side of transplant. The procedure involved taking hair from the back of my head and transplanting the follicles into my frontal area. I was given a tour of the facility, which includes latest operating room equipment and I had the surgery on March 17, 2007. I arrived at 8:00 am. The staff was ready and waiting for me and made me feel very comfortable. The surgery lasted until 3:30 pm. I had 2850 follicles implanted and there was no pain. It was the most relaxing surgery you could have. I would without hesitation recommend Dr. John Porcaro for any type of cosmetic surgery you have a need for.

With a 30 year career in the media both radio and television appearance has always been paramount to me and many of my colleagues in the industry.
My father's hair began thinning early and by around the age of 30 he had already developed "male pattern baldness" with the traditional band of hair around the sides. It never seemed to bother him and as a young man I wondered if I was going to inherit his side of the gene pool or my Mother's. Her family had thick hair into their 80's and beyond.
I guess it was around the time I had turned 40 I had noticed that my thick crop was thinning, this was especially noticeable to me when doing television (under the strong lights) or when photos were taken of me during stage performances. Now while many friends and associates had said, "don't worry about it no one cares about how much hair you have!" It truly bothered me.
While spending sometime on the sets in Los Angeles and having worked with some of the more recognizable names in the entertainment industry I found that many actors and fellow journalists were not succumbing to hair loss with weaves and toupees but were turning to microsurgery and hair transplantation.
Needless to say, and maybe it was my years in the broadcast industry, the reporter in me began to probe and ask questions and then ask some more. I interviewed countless patients I saw, and pardon me for the movie reference, "the good, the bad and the ugly!" So, at that juncture I knew what I did not want and knew exactly the type of procedure I wanted. I also interviewed countless physicians, yes physicians; anyone who would consider a procedure of this type without the skilled hands of a surgeon, in my opinion is not the way to go!
It wasn't until years later at a social fundraiser I was hosting that I met Dr. John Porcaro. Now, at the time he was just introduced to me as Dr. Porcaro and I had no idea of what type of practice he had. We spoke for a bit and I thought maybe this local Doctor, in South Florida, know someone in the hair transplantation business, he replied with the "funny you should ask" and gave me his card. I later went to his office and examined his practice with a fine tooth comb, I again being the journalist, called and interviewed former patients and went to see them before and after and was very impressed.
Needless to say at that point I was sold on Dr. John Porcaro, who through my research found was a trained vascular surgeon and a Board Certified Hair Restoration Surgeon as well! I decided hair transplantation was for me.
My anxiety of discomfort or thinking I would look like a lobotomy patient were quickly dismissed when I woke up the next morning with no discomfort or strange feelings about the look. Dr. Porcaro was quick to put me at ease long before the surgery that in the "post-op" days I wouldn't really notice much of anything that is was just a matter of waiting.
Well, the weeks past and then months and then the comments started, first from my wife, who is a licensed cosmetologist, beautician and professional make-up artist, and she said, "you are really getting hair up there!" Of course she was referring to the thin area I had especially towards the front of my scalp. Then, later others made comments like "are you combing your hair differently?" Now, mind you, this was only after one procedure!
In closing, I will tell you if you or any friend or loved one is considering hair transplantation, stop thinking and do it! I am getting ready for follow-up procedures to get even a "fuller look." But also, don't fall victim to the "used car dealer" approach to hair restoration, we've all seen the ads and infomercials.
Take time, do your research as I did. You can even utilize the services of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery and meet someone, as I did with Dr. John Porcaro, where you will feel comfortable in the professional who is doing this procedure.
I realize as while writing this it almost comes off like a commercial for hair restoration, however, I feel since I am a communicator what better way than to communicate to the thousands out there who have been on the fence about these procedures to at least do your homework and then feel better about yourself.
Remember, hair restoration is not only cosmetic on the outside but gives you a feeling of well-being and adds to your self esteem as well.
Do as I did, stop thinking about it before you lose any more hair!
